Building Your Meat Goat Web Site Using Your Website to Sell Meat Goat and Boer Goat Breeding Stock Your website is more important than ever for selling meat goats and Boer goats. There are
things you
need to know to do it successfully! Websites have
become more important than ever for
selling meet goat and Boer goat breeding stock. In the past people were
successful
selling
breeding stock by networking with others at shows and educational
seminars, but today most people
have access to the internet. They use the
internet to find things they would like to buy and to research things
they would like to
learn about. Many
potential buyers don’t go to shows and seminars any more because it is
easier
for them to do their learning, their networking, and their shopping
on line.
Many meat goat producers sell goat meat directly to the consumers via the internet. To sell meat directly to a consumer the animals must be slaughtered in a United Sates Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspected plant. Federal inspectors (veterinarians) must be present all the while animals are being slaughtered and while the meat is being processed. The cost of these inspectors is paid by the processing plant. This makes the slaughtering of sheep or goats in USDA inspected plants, on a small scale, very expensive (about $2.00 per pound of meat.) There are markets for certified organic goat meat and natural grass fed goat meat. These products are being sold to health food stores, restaurants, and directly to consumers often using the internet. The key to successful marketing with websites is search engine optimization (SEO). SEO is very important, very controversial, and much has been written about it. Few people know for sure what works, because the ones who have been successful aren’t telling anyone their secrets and neither are the search engines. If “meat goat” is typed into a major search engine such as Google, Bing, or Yahoo, about 650,000 websites that relate to meat goats will be found. If a good job on search engine optimization is done and a site gets into the top 1/10th of 1% of those found it could still be number 600 on the list. Trust me nobody is going to get to or find website number 600. If one types anything pertaining to meat goats or Boer goats into one of the major search engines there is one website that will always be in the top ten. That web site is http://www.boergoats.com, owned by To build one’s own website, one can either learn html (the language that the internet uses) or get an html editing program. We use an html editor called KompoZer to build this website and also the North Arkansas Meat Goat Association website. It is a free share-ware program. If you get it from http://download.cnet.com, it will be easy to open and you will get a link to put on your desk top to open it whenever you wish to use it. If you get the program from the KompoZer web site you will need to know more about computers than we do to figure out how to open it. While KompoZer has a built in program for up loading your website to your internet server, I recommend getting FileZilla, a free FTP (file transfer protocol) program to upload your web site to the server and to manage your files on the server. FileZilla can also be downloaded from http://download.cnet.com. Good tutorials for using these two programs can be found at http://www.thesitewizard.com. Thesitewizard.com website also has good information search engine optimization. One also needs a domain name and a web hosting server to host ones website. Three top rated and inexpensive companies providing these services are advertized on this page. We use the Fat Cow for hosting our "On Line Shopping" website. We are very happy with their service. All of these hosting companies also offer easy to use website building programs that can be used to build small websites easily and quickly without learning to use programs like KompoZer. If you would like to get your website up and running quickly with very little expense I would recommend using one of these hosting companies to get started. Then, if you like you can down load and learn how to use a program such as KompoZer. If money is no object, I recommend using http://www.boergoats.com to do everything for you.
